What did you do today?

I think asking ourselves this question everyday is not only healthy, but necessary for the ambitious:

What did I do that got me further to my big goals today?

A while ago I met somebody that encouraged me to write a list of 40 goals: financial, spiritual, physical and familial.  These 40 goals would give direction to my life and help focus on that which will get me ahead.

The point is that there’s so much clutter out there.  It distracts us.  Decide what you want, hone in on it, and filter out the rest.

Healthcare as an obligation?

I see a lot of flyers around campus and comments on politically-related blogs professing that companies, universities, etc. have an obligation to their employees to provide healthcare benefits.

I think that’s wrong.  Unless one is a part of an organization that exclusively provides healthcare, no enterprise has an obligation to give anybody benefits — any benefits at all.  These organizations are in existence to create products, to educate, whatever.  Not hand out healthcare benefits.

Now, of course, people are usually rational…me, for example, if I was presented with benefits for even a nominal cost — heck yeah, I’d take it!  Getting something for free (or close to free) is always the path of least resistance.

Just a thought.

Keeping the Faith Golf Tournament: local headlines

The Dublin Villager picked up a press release about the golf tournament in my friend’s honor (written by the talented and intelligent Sara Vertuca) and published a great piece on the story behind the event.

An excerpt:

“Since my diagnosis, I have wanted to use my situation to raise awareness, as well as dollars for the cause. Now, with the help of others, I am able to make these goals possible,” Valentine said. “People continue to ask, ‘What can I do to help?’ These two events present unique opportunities for folks to contribute both time and dollars towards helping an excellent cause.”

Valentine was diagnosed with stage 2-B Hodgkin’s disease in February and began chemotherapy treatment this month.

“After my diagnosis, my lifelong friend, Ryan Prestel, decided to organize a charity golf outing and dinner to benefit a charity of my choice,” Valentine said. “Now, with the help of additional friends and community members, we are looking to run a successful event for years to come.”

The charity event will feature a golf outing, dinner and a silent auction. Participants may choose to play in the tournament and dinner or attend the dinner only. Sponsors still are needed for the event. Businesses, organizations or individuals may sponsor a single hole, the front nine or the back nine.

What? Get up EARLY?

Oh jeez, do I need to learn how to do this…

can you imagine the increase in productivity that you could have if you just woke 2 hours early every day?  What a fantastic little piece of coolness.

So, I stumbled upon this piece with the help of Kathy Sierra — “How to Become an Early Riser.”

If you’re a night owl like me, you could really use the advice.

Read How to Become an Early Riser.”
