Still packing…

Just a quick update to everyone: I’ve been MIA because I had to

  • find a place to live
  • buy furniture to put in the place to live
  • buy a car to drive down to the place I live and now work
  • get all the peripheral stuff (insurance, utilities, whatever) lined up
Oh, joys.  I’m driving a UHaul down to Raleigh tomorrow and start next Monday!

So I’ll pick this up once I get Internet and all that.

Thanks everyone.

I just have to say it…

GO BUCKS!

Down by 20, returning for the win to beat the Vols!

An Important Shift

On April 2, I will start at Raleigh, NC-based ChannelAdvisor.

ChannelAdvisor is a mid-stage company whose business is to help merchants sell online.  It was co-founded by Scot Wingo, who started and sold Stingray Software and AuctionRover.  AuctionRover was acquired by GoTo, becoming GoTo Auctions.  GoTo then rebranded as Overture, which was then acquired by Yahoo!

Scot is an amazing person and entrepreneur, and is a huge Star wars fan.  There are, in fact, Star Wars props all around the CA offices (note: they’re awesome).

My interview in mid-Feb consisted of a 2-hr Starbucks run with COO Michael Jones and Scot.  Needless to say, it went well and I felt immediately at home (esp. if you know how much I like Starbucks).

ChannelAdvisor is a Kodiak Venture Partners portfolio company.  John Abraham, my sponsoring partner at KVP for my EIR stint sits on their board and is the lead partner at Kodiak for this company.  I’m grateful to John for introducing me to the company and to Scot.

So I’ll be moving to Raleigh the last weekend of March.  Furthermore, I’m apartment hunting this week.  But before that, I’m actually heading down to Pinehurst for the Catalyst 2007 conference.

Do you know anyone in Raleigh?  Do you know where to live in Raleigh?  Do you live in Raleigh?  Talk to me! scotthurff (at) gmail (dot) com or 614 562 5086.

Listening to Finger Eleven — Paralyzer.

Awesome new song from an older, sort of obscure hard rock band.  This may be their big hit.

Beginning a Series

What have I done over the past six months while working on Groupvine at Kodiak Venture Partners in Boston?

What’s the venture capital world like?

What’s Kodiak like?

What have I been through?

Who did I meet?

What did I learn that I can pass on to you?

What advice did I get?

What would I tell you to do if you wanted to launch your own venture?

Is Boston a cool city? (oh, do I have stories…)

What am I doing now?

These are the questions I’m going to answer in the coming weeks.  I’ve been so head-down in trying to make the Groupvine ship fly that I have built up the answers to these questions and haven’t done the best job I can do in “imparting my wisdom” (or something) for as many people to benefit as possible.

So I’ll keep writing this stuff.  If you find it of value, tell a friend.  If you have questions, ask them.

Yeah! This’ll be fun!
